Bio:
I was born and raised in Southcentral Alaska and grew up hiking, skiing, camping and fishing in the great outdoors. I earned my Master’s Degree in Couples and Family Therapy from the University of Colorado at Denver. Prior to grad school, I worked as a software engineer in the aerospace industry.
My desire to work in mental health began with my own journey as a client experiencing the transformative support of a therapist at a challenging time in my life. My passion is also rooted in going through the “pressure cooker” of my years as a student and watching the impacts of a high achieving environment on the mental health of my peers.
I believe that satisfying and secure relationships are at the core of a meaningful life and I approach my work with both individual and couples clients from an attachment informed lens. My work focuses on relational issues including processing the impacts of family of origin, friendships, dating and romantic relationships. I have completed the first and second level training for Emotionally Focused Therapy, a research-based modality developed by Dr. Sue Johnson.
In EFT couples therapy, neither partner is viewed as the problem. Rather, we look together at the cycle of negative interaction that partners get into over and over again which leads to disconnection, repeated unresolved conflicts and unmet needs in the relationship for both parties. As an EFT therapist, I take the stance that beneath every argument there is an unmet emotional need and a longing for connection. The goal of our work together will be to transform negative interactional patterns by exploring each partner’s perspective, needs and longings such that a deeper level of understanding and compassion emerges for one another. If you would like to get a taste for what Emotionally Focused Therapy will be like, I recommend reading Hold Me Tight by Dr. Sue Johnson.
The willingness to ask for help and attempt new ways of being, both in a relationship with ourselves and with others, takes courage. I feel tremendous respect for my clients who allow me to walk with them on the deeply vulnerable path of intrapersonal and interpersonal discovery, acceptance and evolution. I value cultural humility and believe that clients are the experts in their identities and experiences. I am LGBTQIA+ affirming and aim to provide a safe container for those with marginalized identities.
In my free time, I enjoy crafting, gardening and nerding out on the latest sci-fi and fantasy media.
